Following an enquiry sent to the British Museum regarding the silver denarius found in October, we have received the following response from Mr Ian Leins, Curator of Iron Age and Roman coins:
The coin is a Roman Republican silver denarius, struck in 60BC.
The moneyer (magistrate) responsible for its production is P. Plautius Hypsaeus and it was struck at the Mint of Rome (60BC). The front shows a head of Neptune with trident behind and the inscription (largely missing): P YPSAE S C The back shows a four-horse chariot (quadriga) and has the inscription C YPSAE COS CEPIT PRIV (referring to the capture of the Italian town of Privernum by the Romans in 329BC).
It is published in MH Crawford, Roman Republican Coinage: RRC 420/1.
