Excavations at Clayhanger Street, Burslem
Updated 21st November 2007
Our excavations at Clayhanger Street are proving just too intriguing. We have provisionally identified three ovens, although there's still much work to do to make sense of this complex site. We've been digging much longer than expected, with new features continually being uncovered, and we're hurrying to finish in time for the Christmas break.
We have picked up the hovel wall on the south side of the trench (corresponding to the one in the wall to the north, mid nineteenth century), and another set of firemouths (or ash pits) have been revealed. Early salt glaze saggars have been found, and some eighteenth century slipware sherds have been recovered from a mixed fill.
The photographs below are in (very!) approximate chronological order, with some hastily written notes on the enlargements. More interpretative detail will come when we've finished on site.
