Excavations at Pointhorne

 

Excavation has continued on 29th and 31st July in remarkably good weather. Area A is revealing a rubble layer with bricks and stones that seem to indicate a fairly wide date range. There are stones in situ which may be a foundation wall or wall base, and considerable plaster and bricks.

 

A second trench (Area B) was opened on the 31st, revealing what may be a stone wall base and a cobbled floor surface. Further investigation is required to confirm. This feature fits well with the resistivity results.

Excavation at Pointhorne Begins

 

Excavation finally began at Pointhorne on 22nd July and continued on 24th after being rained off week after week. A trench was opened on the basis of the resistivity results and a little exploratory digging in an area Winston thinks lies on what is likely to be the most recent part of the building (or buildings). The rubble layer was immediately revealed on de-turfing, being approx 3 inches below the surface, with abundant red and yellow bricks, plaster, a few large stones and some iron finds.
