Excavations at Clayhanger Street, Burslem

Updated 3rd November 2007

Work at Clayhanger Street has been continuing on Sundays and Tuesdays, and has been extremely interesting! A moment of disappointment when we discovered that the clay beneath the northern half of the oven floor was natural gave way to excitement when a puzzling cut and two early sagars were found in the southern half. The surrounding clay yielded a significant quantity of early potsherds, including 18th century slipware, with the fill being mainly modern. It has been suggested that the cut may be a flue to an early oven.

The jury is still out on which firm was manufacturing at this site, and we would be grateful for any suggestions!
